Fragments of the Infinite

The world cracked, not with a sound, but with a feeling. A sensation that passed through Elara Quinn’s bones like a tremor of déjà vue. She froze, standing in the middle of the New York Public Library’s Rose Main Reading Room, the sudden stillness around her magnifying the moment.

A second ago, the lamps glowed warmly, scholars shuffled papers, tourists whispered in awe. Now, silence. Elara turned. The room remained, but its essence had changed. Subtly. The murals on the ceiling showed different constellations—strange stars forming alien zodiac signs. The marble busts along the walls were unfamiliar faces with names engraved in scripts she couldn’t read. And outside the tall arched windows, the skyline no longer matched Manhattan. There were spires of crystal, glowing like veins of light against a dark lavender sky.

Elara gripped the edge of a table. Her heart thudded like a drum in her chest. She had seen this before—in her dreams, always fragmented, always ending before the truth revealed itself. But this was real. The multiverse had opened, and somehow, she had crossed.
